Transportation to/from airport
Taxi: Licensed airport taxis operate from the dedicated ground-transport counter on Level 1. Fares to the city centre are fixed at RM30–35, with an additional RM1–RM2 per kilometre beyond 10 km. Taxis run 24/7; prepaid coupons avoid haggling. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and MyCar serve the airport with competitive app-based fares.
Train: Train service is not directly available at BKI. The nearest rail connection is the historic Sabah State Railway departing from Tanjung Aru station, approximately 5 km away. Bus: Public bus Route 16 departs from the Ground Transport bay on Level 2 every thirty minutes from 06:00 to 22:00. The air-conditioned coach charges RM2 per trip to downtown Kota Kinabalu, terminating at the central bus terminal. Return tickets cost RM3. Payment is by cash; IC cards are not accepted. (more info)
Shuttle: Many local hotels and resorts offer free shuttle services to and from KKIA, with schedules typically aligned to flight arrivals. These shuttles pick up outside the arrivals hall and require advance reservation via hotel concierge. Some independent operators run hourly shared-ride vans for RM10 per person. Car rentals: Major car rental companies such as Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar and local firms maintain counters in the arrivals hall. Vehicles include economy hatchbacks, SUVs and MPVs. Drivers must present a valid international licence, passport and credit card deposit. Parking: KKIA features a multi-level car park adjacent to the terminal with over 1,400 bays. Rates are RM3 per hour, capped at RM30 per day. Long-term parking is available at Level P4 with discounted weekly rates. Payment can be made via cash or Touch’n Go card at automated machines located near each exit.
Luggage Storage & Lockers
A left luggage counter is located landside on Level 3 opposite the departures hall entrance. Charges are RM8 per bag for the first 3 hours; lockers run RM5 per 2 hours.
